How to get rid of belly fat has been my number one goal through all of the dieting and exercise.  Once I had no problem in this area, but the stress and inactivity of the past few years has given me too much weight around the middle.  It’s unattractive, embarrassing and seemingly hard to get rid of, and it’s not healthy for an aging body.

What I know about belly fat

There are basically two types of fat I am concerned with, subcutaneous fat and Visceral fat.

Subcutanious fat is the fat that is toward the outside.  You can pinch it with your fingers. It serves the purpose of regulating your temperature, keeping you warm in the winter.  Excess subcutanious fat can lead to many health problems.

Visceral fat is hidden on the inside, amongst all of the vital organs of the body.  It is extremely hard to lose even with a low fat diet.  It is caused by the hormone cortisol, which our body produces during times of stress.  This can be deadly because it is so close to your heart and liver, and increases your chances of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and alzheimer’s disease.


It’s very difficult to lose belly fat but it is not impossible.  There is hope!  Exercise can help you lose it and gain muscle strength at the same time.  If you’re simply looking to invest in your future health or coveting your favorite celebrity’s midriff, start adding these three  tips to get rid of belly fat.  Incorperate them  into your normal diet and exercise routine and watch your waistline shrink.

Stay Away From Trans Fats
What you don’t eat is just as important to your waistline as what you’re eating. A recent study done at Wake Forest University has concluded that trans fat, which has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, may also increase dangerous belly fat. 

Trans fat is formed during a hydrogenation process in which vegetable oil is converted into a solid to increase shelf life of a food. As of this year, manufacturers were required to list trans fat on the labels of their products.  Our top concerns here are butter, packaged food, soups, fast food, frozen food, and baked goods, (cookies, cakes, etc.), are all foods you need to be wary of in order to get rid of belly fat.

This seems simple, but as we develop busy lives it is harder and harder to fit all of our necessary activities into the day.  Many times we take that time we need away from our sleep.  Studies have shown that those who get less than four hours of sleep per night are more than 70 percent more likely to be obese than those who get seven to nine hours.

Sleep deprivation lowers leptin, a protein that suppresses appetite and tells the brain when the stomach is full. Not catching enough Z’s also inhibits the production of insulin, which regulates blood sugar. So, if you’re constantly burning the midnight oil, you’re interfering with your body’s ability to burn off extracalories.  So it is easy, get more sleep and get rid of belly fat.

Build Up The Strength of Your Core

Getting serious about getting rid of belly fat means expanding your thinking. It’s not just about your stomach; it’s about your entire middle, or what experts refer to as “the core.”

If you really want to see big differences, you’ve got to work the entire core including the front, sides and back. Basic crunches, for example, are fine for working the upper, front ab muscles but don’t do much for the obliques that wrap around the sides of your waist or the lower back muscles that anchor into your lower spine.

I saw this video called belly fat tribute, I’m not sure what they were trying to accomplish, but it motivated me to stay away from the candy bar I have been eyeing for about an hour!!
