Losing Body Fat, A Marathon Not A Sprint

losing_body_fat_1Losing body fat should be viewed as a marathon not a sprint. It seems like everybody wants instant results, in everything that they do. Instant satisfaction is the expectation that society has given us. When it comes to getting rid of fat, a slow steady pace is definitely the most healthy approach for your weight loss and your overall health.

It is a fact that our bodies need a certain level of fat to function properly, such as making sure we are able to maintain our body core temperature.  It is unfortunately also a fact that most of us are carrying around enough fat to keep a small village warm!  Weight loss is a common theme everywhere you look, it would seem that more people should focus on losing body fat is the key to successful, long term weight loss.

There are an almost unlimited methods of weight loss you can experiment with.  One of the most ridiculous is starving yourself.  On the surface, it makes sense, “I am fat, too much food is the problem. Stop eating food.”  A rational person may have this thought, but what they fail to realize is that when the body senses it is being deprived of food, it begins to feed on itself to create the energy needed to maintain vital functions.  That means that losing_body_fat_cartoonyou not only lose some fat, but your muscles are being weakened.  This will also slow your metabolism down and any calories that you do consume will be stored as fat.  When you inevitably eat a regular diet again, your body will remember that you were recently starving and store more fat, so the next time you will be more prepared.  Much of the weight loss which will occur because of starvation is not fat loss at all.

Losing body fat is a long term process that will help a person to be healthier overall.  You will lose weight for the long term and be less susceptible to illness.  How do you exactly do this?  Reduce the number of calories consumed, while adding lower calorie alternatives which will help your body feel full.  Adding a workout of aerobic exercise designed to increase your metabolism.  Working out will also enable you to burn calories more efficiently and guarantee that losing body fat is taking place, not just weight loss.

losing_body_fat_fitnessTo summarize, when the body senses that it is being adequately fed, yet the demand for energy in the form of calories is increased, the fat stores in the body are broken down to create more glucose to feed the cells. Continuing to burn more calories than you consume, without starving one’s self will lead to continued fat loss, until the person reaches their weight loss goal. Then you simply have to  continue to eat a healthy diet and maintain a consistent  exercise program and you will keep the excess fat off. Losing body fat is the key to long term success in a weight loss plan.

Jack,

I agree with this article and the fact the this is a marathon not a sprint. Many people want a quick fix and that usually gets them in trouble.

Keep up the good work.
